The Second Pillar of Islam
Salah (prayer) is the second pillar of Islam and the most important act of worship after the declaration of faith. It is the direct connection between a Muslim and Allah, performed five times daily.
The Five Daily Prayers
Fajr (Dawn Prayer)
Performed before sunrise, consisting of 2 rak'ahs (units). It marks the beginning of the daily prayer cycle.
Time: Before dawn until sunrise
Rak'ahs: 2 Sunnah + 2 Fard
Dhuhr (Noon Prayer)
Performed after the sun passes its zenith, consisting of 4 rak'ahs. It's the first prayer of the day.
Time: After midday until Asr
Rak'ahs: 4 Sunnah + 4 Fard + 2 Sunnah
Asr (Afternoon Prayer)
Performed in the late afternoon, consisting of 4 rak'ahs. It's the middle prayer of the day.
Time: Late afternoon until sunset
Rak'ahs: 4 Sunnah + 4 Fard
Maghrib (Sunset Prayer)
Performed just after sunset, consisting of 3 rak'ahs. It marks the end of the daylight hours.
Time: Immediately after sunset
Rak'ahs: 3 Fard + 2 Sunnah
Isha (Night Prayer)
Performed after twilight has disappeared, consisting of 4 rak'ahs. It's the final prayer of the day.
Time: After nightfall until midnight
Rak'ahs: 4 Sunnah + 4 Fard + 2 Witr + 2 Sunnah
How to Perform Salah
Step 1: Preparation
Ensure you are in a state of purity (wudu), face the Qibla (direction of Kaaba in Mecca), and have a clean prayer space.
Intention (Niyyah): Make the intention in your heart for the specific prayer.
Step 2: Takbir
Raise your hands to your ears and say "Allahu Akbar" (Allah is the Greatest) to begin the prayer.
Position: Hands raised to ear level, palms facing forward
Step 3: Standing (Qiyam)
Recite Surah Al-Fatihah (the opening chapter) followed by another surah or verses from the Qur'an.
Position: Standing straight, hands on chest or sides
Step 4: Bowing (Ruku')
Bend at the waist, place hands on knees, and say "Subhana Rabbiyal Adhim" (Glory be to my Lord, the Mighty).
Position: Back straight, head level with back, hands gripping knees
Step 5: Standing Briefly
Stand up straight from bowing and say "Sami Allahu liman hamidah" (Allah hears those who praise Him).
Response: "Rabbana lakal hamd" (Our Lord, to You be praise)
Step 6: Prostration (Sujud)
Place forehead, nose, hands, knees, and toes on the ground. Say "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la" (Glory be to my Lord, the Highest).
Position: Seven points touching the ground
Step 7: Sitting Between Prostrations
Sit briefly and say "Allahu Akbar" before the second prostration.
Position: Sitting on left foot, right foot upright
Step 8: Second Prostration
Perform the second prostration exactly like the first, saying "Subhana Rabbiyal A'la."
Completion: This completes one rak'ah (unit)
Prayer Etiquette & Tips
Timeliness
Pray at the prescribed times. Each prayer has a specific time window and should not be delayed without valid reason.
Best practice: Pray as soon as the time begins
Congregational Prayer
Praying in congregation (Jama'ah) at the mosque is highly recommended and carries 27 times more reward.
For men: Obligatory to pray in congregation when possible
Cleanliness
Ensure your body, clothes, and prayer area are clean. Perform wudu (ablution) before each prayer.
Remember: Cleanliness is part of faith
Concentration (Khushu')
Focus your heart and mind on the prayer. Avoid distractions and contemplate the meaning of what you're reciting.

Facing Qibla
Always face the direction of the Kaaba in Mecca during prayer. Use a compass or mosque direction indicator.

Common Questions
What if I miss a prayer?
If you miss a prayer due to sleep or forgetting, make it up as soon as you remember. This is called Qada.

Can I shorten prayers while traveling?
Yes, during travel you can shorten 4-rak'ah prayers to 2 rak'ahs (Qasr) and combine prayers (Jam').

When do children start praying?
Children should be taught to pray from age 7 and required to pray at age 10 according to Islamic tradition.
